OUR COMMITMENT TO INCLUSIVITY & ACCESSIBILITY

Having a safe space to be yourself isn't always a guarantee. For those of us who hold one or more marginalized identities it can be especially hard to find everyday services that make us feel comfortable and welcome while also being affordable.

As a queer, neurodivergent owned and operated business we are committed to providing a space that is:

LGBTQIA+ friendly

Trans friendly

Anti-racist

Body neutral

Trauma-informed

Affordable* & accessible** to all

We know that communication plays a big role in accessibility. Lauren is fluent in English and French, has basic knowledge of Spanish, Russian, and Mandarin, and can fingerspell and use basic ASL signs to help make sessions more comfortable for clients who communicate in different ways.

For the health and safety of our community, Lauren is up to date on all COVID-19 and influenza vaccinations and boosters.

*Sliding scale payment options are available. Learn more about pricing here.

**We will happily work with you to provide personalized accommodations to make our services accessible to you.

We are always working on improving. If you see a way that we can be doing better, please don't hesitate to reach out and let us know.

OUR STORY

How it all started:

In March 2020, Asbury Alterations Owner, Lauren was busy working in the world of theatre when they found themselves, like so many of us, suddenly out of a job with no potential work in sight. While trying to figure out her next move she started to create, eventually opening an Etsy shop named "Turn to the Sun Crafts" to share her work. Creating for Etsy was fun, but it still felt like something was missing.

Lauren has always felt that clothing and personal style play a significant role in how we move through society. Clothing can be both a powerful tool for self expression and a means of forming connections/building community-- but customization of clothing isn't always a friendly process for everyone. With this in mind, Lauren decided to use her skills at the sewing machine to change that narrative. And thus, Asbury Alterations (Formerly "Turn to the Sun Tailoring") was born!

MEET THE OWNER

Lauren (she/they)

Lauren is a queer, neurodivergent artist with a background in costume design for theatre and over 15 years of sewing experience. They received their MFA in Costume Design & Technology from West Virginia University in 2017 where they completed advanced coursework in everything from creating Elizabethan style gowns to hand tailoring modern day suits from scratch. (Check out Lauren's portfolio website to see more of her theatrical work). Lauren has extensive experience with fabric painting & dyeing, and her current favorite crafty endeavor is finding old, outdated garments and re-imagining them into something new and exciting with the help of some paint/bleach/dye!

When Lauren isn't working, you'll most often find them diving head first into a new artistic hobby, spending quality time with their wife and two dogs, or collecting more crystals, rocks, and sea glass than any human should reasonably own.
